An ode to the Sapphire

The Blue Sapphire (commonly known only as Sapphire) is regarded a birthstone for those born in September.

Did you know that the Sapphire belongs to the same corundum species as the Ruby. [A rock forming mineral, corundum is a crystalline form of aluminium oxide typically containing traces of iron, titanium, vanadium and chromium.] When the trace element is chromic oxide, the corundum is called Ruby, whereas when trace elements are iron and titanium, the corundum is called Blue Sapphire. Similarly, when the trace element is predominantly iron, we get the Yellow Sapphire.

Hence, depending on the trace elements, a corundum or sapphire can be found in various hues, commonly known as fancy sapphires - pink, yellow, orange, green, purple, violet. etc. The prices they fetch can be equal, if not more, than the Blue Sapphire, depending on the colour saturation, origin, clarity, rarity, size of the stone among other factors.

To mark this month, we have composed an ode to not just this rare and alluring September-stone, but also to its wearer. According to astrology, the Sapphire is arguably the stone which has the greatest impact on its wearer.

Of chemistry, of earth

A corundum with diamonds

A nest among stars

Roots firmly grounded

In faith, in verve.
